Orthokeratology is a relatively new eye technology. These specialized lenses work to temporarily reshape the contour of the cornea for refractive vision errors, such as nearsightedness, hyperopia and astigmatism. It’s important to note that if you stop wearing the lenses, your eyes will go back to their original shape and refractive error. So, you will have to continue to wear the lenses as long as you wish to maintain the effect.
You wear the specialized Ortho-K lenses while sleeping and remove them in the morning when you wake up for stable vision throughout the day. It’s a good option for those who don’t want to wear eyeglasses or undergo Lasik eye surgery. Some people experience good vision after a day or two of overnight Ortho-K, while others take longer. Typically, higher prescriptions can take two weeks or more for maximum correction. Basically, refractive error, corneal shape and corneal tissue determine the time effect for Ortho-K.
So how long do Ortho-K lenses last?
Ortho-K lenses can last up to three years with good care. However, if your prescription changes, they may need to be replaced more frequently.
It is important to note that Ortho-K is a very specialized type of contact lens fitting, and not all optometrists can fit them. If you’re a good candidate for Ortho-K, an optometrist will measure the curvatures of your corneas using a corneal topographer. It’s a painless procedure, which produces a topographical map of the eye’s surface. An optometrist may use an in-office inventory for your Ortho-K lenses or order custom lenses for fitting on your next appointment. Typically, a series of temporary lenses are required to reach maximum vision correction. At first, you’ll likely feel these lenses, but Ortho-K lenses become less noticeable with time.
